Paulena Smith

Resolution Health Support Worker / Elder & Cultural

My name is Paulena Smith. I am a Tsimshian, Haida and Portuguese Woman. I have a blended family. I am married to my best friend, Tom Smith; we are blessed. I was born in Prince Rupert on a rainy Sunday. I moved to Vancouver young and was raised in East Vancouver. I am a survivor of the 60 Scoops.

As a family in the urban setting, we joined a Tsimshian dance group. Knowing our culture became the focal point in our family. We shared culture throughout the urban environment. Being a part of my culture was my healing journey. I have seen the power of being part of our culture and participating in traditional ceremonial rituals, and seeing the richness of our culture in our family become even more meaningful when I was raised with none is so powerful.

My career has been front-line and Indigenous-focused support worker. I have ample experience working with all ages and specific program development to support families. I became a strong advocate; navigator of ministry and health systems so young and at-risk teen parents can keep their families together. Watching our at-risk youth face adversity proves we are resilient, can overcome addiction, and can break the cycle with community support. The intergenerational effects of Residential school survivors and 60 scoops were seen in the second and third-generation children I worked with. The vulnerability, trustworthiness and honesty needed to carry these women into adulthood were immense. I believe in showing up to provide community support to the most vulnerable people and their families.

As a front-line worker, I have learned so much from all who have crossed my path. I have learned that sitting with our indigenous families is a privilege. I know the importance of respect; it is not easily given, and we need to work for it and always maintain relationships with care. Our Indigenous people know what to do; sometimes, they need help. I can plant seeds to help our people grow and bring light to their darkness. In that case, I am fulfilling my Resolution Health Support Worker work. I am grateful to be in this helping position.
